Hi, this is my first upload of tutorials that I hoard on my hdd. I routinely re-encode tutorials that I find useful into better format (HEVC/AV1). As far as I understand uploading transcoded tutorials is OK while they are on the same quality level and have great compression rate (something near x10, judging from rules). Here is an comparison of screenshots: https://www.diffchecker.com/image-compare/mVfp50Ll/.
Tool that I use automatically renames transcoded file names with most important encoder settings, I found it useful to keep track of video files state in

the filename. My container of choice for av1 is webm (basically a restricted mkv), audio re-encoded by libopus at 50kbps target (this is one of default youtube targets, I cant hear any artifacts for speech compared to source. Far better than libfdk_aac at 64kbps). As a result you can play this file right from any modern browser (not sure why you would want that, but you can).

Note: I use big interval between I-frames(GOP) – 20s. Scene change detection in AV1 was functionally useless last time I checked, and it is disabled by default. In worst case seeking pause for frame calculation is around 3s for mpv player to go through all 19s (I have old Intel ~3.3Ghz 10 core, and find this pause bearable). But on the positive side, scenes with lots of static screen space are compressed even better without any image degradation. For example, first file in tutorial is compressed to 33.6MiB with –keyint ’20s’, and on default encoder setting –keyint ‘-2’ (~5 seconds) it is 43.6MiB. ~22% relative file size reduction.

I bet someone with GPU decoder (since RTX 30-Series) or modern CPU would get 1s or less in worst case – which is the idea.

MECHANICAL RIGGING IN BLENDER: THE ESSENTIAL MINI-COURSE

If you’ve ever tried rigging a mechanical model in Blender, you know the pain:
hard-surface meshes that bend instead of staying solid
joints that twist the wrong way
Pistons that break or stretch
And a rig that looks simple but becomes a mess once you animate it
Don’t spend weeks trying “to reinvent the piston” 🙂 . Spend just 75 minutes with this course, and you’ll never rig mechanical joints the old way again.
Who This Course Is For
Blender users who understand rigging basics, but want to rig mechanical models properly.
